We support anyone trying to make positive change in the fire service. There are a few other folks out there talking about these concepts and there is room for all of us at this table! There is one particular group that gears their Field Training Model toward EMS. We think they do a pretty darn good job. A LOT of agencies have been through their training and use their model. We're not knocking them - but our class is more personalized. When you leave our class on day three, you leave with a library at your fingertips to make your program successful.
Frankly, the model that others out there teach is the same one we teach. It was established by the law enforcement community in the 1970's and is the industry standard for them to this date, throughout the U.S. We have been able to replicate the same successes in the fire service using this model.
So if we all teach the same thing, what sets us apart?
No other program spends as much time focusing on mentorship and positive culture change within your agency. Anyone can pick up your field training or evaluation materials and "grade" someone. Good evaluation criteria are good evaluation criteria. But, if you want new hires to keep improving rather than just check boxes on JPRs, if you want tools to fix it when they aren't doing so well, if you want to turn out the best quality new hire for the community and our brothers and sisters in the firehouse... then the field trainer must fully appreciate what it means to be a mentor.
Even the saltiest fire and EMS legends had to start somewhere. Let's raise up the best of the best. We're not talking "woke," kinder, or gentler. We're not talking about making your field trainers "friends" and we're surely not handing out free hugs. We're talking about being calculated and deliberate as a confidant and mentor . . . which we've ALL had in the fire service.
On the second day, after our students has an idea what being mentor looks like for them, we address potential legal pitfalls – even stuff most Chiefs and H.R. likely don't know about.
On day three, we also on custom-tailoring these ideas for your agency, something else that sets us apart from other programs. We're often told by training chiefs or officers that the individual FTOs don't need to be involved in that process. But if there is an issue with any of the evaluation criteria, or the program in general, wouldn't you prefer an educated field trainer who can bring you a solution, rather than just "squawk" about it?
We can also help host agencies comb through their existing field training manual, SOPs, and SOGs, to ensure they have solid footing as they rework, rebuild, or restart their program.
Each student gets the instructors' personal cell phone numbers (not such a fun idea when a group at FDIC decides to call at 0100 hours), and we're consistently in touch to make sure anything the student needs is answered.
